| The downstairs
sunflower bathroom, which also houses the well, has a small propane heat unit which can be turned on when leaving the house for extended periods during the winter months.
This prevents freezing of water pipes.
In 2004, we added a vented propane stove to the family room.
It can quickly heat the room on days when the wood stove would be excessive.

There is a propane hot water heater located in the sunflower bathroom. The heater can get water directly from the well or receive preheated water from the Copper Cricket solar hot water system or from the wood hot water heating system. When these systems are functioning at full capacity, the propane water heater can be bypassed altogether.

There is a Sears Kenmore Gas stove in the kitchen which runs on propane. |
| The house is equipped with a propane carbureted generator in the workshop and two gasoline carbureted generators which are housed in the side tool shed. The generators can act as emergency backup during extensive periods of cloudy windless days. They can be used to power large AC loads such at the compressor and can be used to charge the house battery system. The propane generator has an electric start which runs off house current, on one occasion, the current dropped too low to power the generator and we had to jump start the house off the car! |
